Innocent Mini Movies Competition :: Kino Exclusive!

Such is the reputation of Kino as a hotbed of filmmaking talent, the guys at Innocent Smoothies got in touch to ask if they could announce their new Mini Movies competition with us first!

As wary as we are of companies exploiting filmmakers to get ads made on the cheap, that’s not really what’s happening here. They just made one, and it’s pretty good (watch it here, with making-of here). They’ve also made the above video to explain what they’re looking for, and which a lot of filmmaking thought has gone into. It’s actually pretty inspiring (in an “I can do that too!” kind of way) to watch.

So, all in all I think it’s one of the nicest – and potentially most fun – filmmaking competitions out there. Your completed 30 second films should be uploaded to the Innocent Youtube channel by 17th April.

Winner gets £5000, plus their ad shown on tv. Oh, and 2 tickets to the BFI London Film Festival (a strangely small prize in amongst some rather large ones…).

At time of writing they haven’t even launched the competition web page yet, but Kino Londoners can get a head start by watching the video above. Pretty much everything you need to know is contained within.

If you need some help in the props department, Innocent are sending us over 15 of their filmmaker’s kits, which contain one of those mini superhero capes and some string – great! You can pick one of these up at our next screening at Vibe Live on 24th Feb.

I can understand why Innocent would want to do an ad competition. I had already noted this ad to be among the worst on telly for its lameness on par with those Orange phone ads. Mucking about with schoolboy pranks has gone to much higher levels such as the superb Doritos UFO ad. That makes plastic bottles glued to sticks very lame guys. I’m sure there are lots of Indie talents out there.

Oh, I don’t agree. I think the ad is awesome. It harks back to the days of puppets on strings – no CG – and that’s what they’re encouraging with the competition. In that sense I think it’s pretty inspriring.

Sure, 5 grand is a drop in the ocean for the amount of publicity they’ll generate, but they’re not really looking for a proper TV ad either. They have that already. It’s just a challenge to filmmakers of the sort that we do at Kino (except that we don’t have 5 grand to hand out…)

The guys at kino have worked so hard.
I think this is an amazing opportunity!
    Congrats!

I think that that might be a pass to the whole film festival, which is not as small potatoes as you might think. I do not need it, however, because I have already bought one.

You bought a pass or a smoothie…?! Yes, I think you’re right. I’m reading their press release a little too literally. A good prize indeed.

I have bought a pass. I do not like smoothies because they are too thick.
