Kino #19: Loco, by Oliver Smyth
Loco, by Oliver Smyth
Loco is a significant departure from previous treats Oliver Smyth has brought to the Kino screen. Filmed in just half an hour, it’s his first that “wasn’t staged in any way” and I think he’s found another string to add to his bow.
This film is a perfect example of why I’m addicted to documentaries (well, one of the reasons). It’s a portrait of those in-between bits that make us who we are; a glimpse into human quirks which aren’t our own. Oliver Smyth’s father Christopher, the star of Loco, lovingly builds steam trains and delights as they go round and round the track. The great thing is, for the three-and-a-bit minutes that the film lasts, I was just as excited as he was.
